FAQ's
Blood flow is the most important aspect of getting and maintaining an erection. For this reason, poor circulation can cause erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction may also be a result of other health issues, emotional problems, or both.
When a man is sexually aroused, nerves will release chemicals that will increase the flow of blood to the penis. The blood will flow into two chambers that are located in the penis. These chambers are made of spongy muscle tissues. This spongy muscle tissue is referred to as the corpus cavernosum. When a man gets an erection, the corpus cavernosum will relax and then trap the blood inside. The pressure of the blood inside of the chambers will cause the penis to become firm. This is what causes the penis to become hard.
When a man orgasms, another set of nerves will create a signal. When this signal reaches the penis it causes the muscular tissues of the penis to begin to contract. The blood is then released back into circulation. At this time the erection will go down.
When a man is not sexually aroused his penis is going to feel soft and limp. A man may notice the size of his penis varies based on cold, warmth, and even worry. This is quite normal as it reflects the amount of blood that is coming and going through the penis.
There are several known risk factors for developing erectile dysfunction. Many of these risk factors also cause restricted blood flow throughout the body, causing poor circulation that in turn can cause erectile dysfunction. Some of the common risk factors associated with erectile dysfunction include:
- Age (men over the age of 50 are more likely to develop ED)
- High blood sugar
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Alcohol consumption
- Use of illegal drugs
- Sedentary lifestyle
Erectile dysfunction is more common in men as they get older, however, aging does not always cause a man to develop the condition. Often, erectile dysfunction is the sign that something more serious going on in the body. Given this, it is important that men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction discuss their issue with a GAINSWave® treatment provider.
Erectile dysfunction occurs when blood flow to the penis is restricted. Health issues such as heart disease, hardened arteries, and diabetes may all cause a lack of blood flow to the penis. Men who smoke are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction since smoking can decrease blood flow throughout the body.
If the penis cannot trap any blood into the spongy tissues located in the erection chambers, they will be unable to achieve an erection. If the blood gets trapped in the penis but cannot stay there, a man will lose his erection. Poor circulation and poor blood flow are both common among men who suffer from erectile dysfunction.

When it comes to erectile dysfunction, blood circulation is extremely important. There are some lifestyle changes that may help improve the symptoms of erectile dysfunction. If you are overweight, dieting and losing weight may help with your erection issues. Men who smoke should quit as soon as possible.
There are also treatments available that can help to improve circulation. GAINSWave® is a form of erectile dysfunction treatment that uses low-intensity sound waves in order to improve the flow of blood to the penis.
- Lack of sexual desire – Also known as a “low libido” having a lack of sexual desire means, “a decreased interest in sexual activity”. Although a man’s sexual desire varies from time to time and might not match your partner’s interest, its only should be a cause for concern if it starts to happen for a long period of time.
- Inability to get or keep an erection – Also known as “impotence or ED”, this is the man’s inability to keep or get an erection, firm enough for sex.
As mentioned above, erectile dysfunction (also known as ED or impotence) is defined as the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex. Common symptoms of ED are:
- Trouble getting an erection
- Trouble keeping an erection
- Reduced sexual desire
ED isn’t an immediate cause for concern or require a doctor’s medical attention if it happens infrequently or inconsistently. If ED is ongoing, it could be a sign for more serious and underlying medical conditions and [per Mayo Clinic] “a risk factor for heart disease”. We suggest calling a doctor if ED starts to affect the below areas in your life:
Mentally – ED starts to ruin your self-confidence and/or self-esteem
Relationships – if the current or previous relationships have or is being affected by ED
High stress – Stress can aggravate other medical issues and can be detrimental to a person’s medical health (beyond ED). ED should be handled if it’s causing a considerable amount of stress in your life.
Age – Common issues arise as you age
Underlying health issues: In many cases, it is estimated that an underlying health issue might be the cause of ED. If you haven’t already been diagnosed with the below issues, doctors will examine and test you for the below medical conditions:
- Heart disease
- Clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis)
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Metabolic syndrome — a condition involving increased blood pressure, high insulin levels, body fat around the waist and high cholesterol
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Certain prescription medications
- Tobacco use
- Peyronie’s disease — development of scar tissue inside the penis
- Alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse
- Sleep disorders
- Retrograde ejaculation – this happens when seme is forced into the bladder, rather than out of a man’s penis.
- Treatments for prostate cancer or enlarged prostate
- Surgeries or injuries that affect the pelvic area or spinal cord
- Testosterone levels- “Erections depend on testosterone, but the relationship between the two is complex and not fully understood. Some men have healthy erections despite testosterone levels well below the normal range. Low testosterone levels are linked to a number of the same chronic conditions that play a role in erectile dysfunction, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.”
- Mental and Emotional Issues – Psychological factors are responsible for about 10%-20% of all cases of ED. Specifically there a couple of mental and emotional factors that further cause ED.
- High Stress – Stress can cause several other medical issues further adding to the medical issues that can cause ED.
- Anxiety
- Low Self Esteem
Risk Factors: These are factors or things you do in your life that might be affecting your health and/or causing ED. Doctors would look at:
- Tobacco use – Tobacco restricts blood flow to veins and arteries, can — over time — cause chronic health conditions that lead to erectile dysfunction.
- Being overweight – “Further, moderately active or inactive men had an approximately 40–60% greater odds of ED compared with active men.” according to a 2009 study in the journal of sexual medicine.
- Certain medical treatments, such as prostate surgery or radiation treatment for cancer
- Injuries – Doctors will look at nerve, artery (specifically ones that control erections) ,and organ damage
- Medications – Some medication like antidepressants, antihistamines, and medications can create or exacerbate ED
- Psychological conditions – As mentioned before, stress, anxiety or depression can create or add to ED
- Drug and alcohol use – This is more prominent with heavy drinkers and/or long-term drug users.
- Pre-existing health issues: Some of the most common medical conditions that could cause ED are, diabetes heart disease, and obesity.
